How it All Began....cont.
Keith Whitting, Roger Wroe and Des Harris (Sadly no longer with us) took on the task to find a new site. They found a field just a few hundred yards from the existing site. At 2.3 acres it was the ideal size and the purchase was completed early in 2007. Planning permission had been granted and work was to proceed as funds became available.
September 2007 saw the start of work to the entrance and the road into the site soon followed. The first build was the equipment shed. This would eventually be home for all of the Green Maintenance equipment and double up as a workshop. The work was carried out by members who were bricklayers and carpenters etc. and was finished mid 2008.
The site was fenced and a Beech Hedge was planted to the perimeter. A public footpath cuts across the site and a "Kissing Gate" was erected within the fence area.
In the Autumn of 2008 work was started on the New Green. Hundreds of tons of soil was moved to level the site.
A drainage system was installed and covered with several layers of different graded grit and eventually the top soil.
Ditches were installed and a block paved pathway around the Green. The grass seed was sewn in April 2009.
Once again the work was completed with the help of members putting in many hours of unpaid labour.
The next phase of the project was the building of the Club House. After several hic-cups with a new planning application work finally started in April 2010. The contractor, Cliff Dyer and his assistant Danny, erected the main framework and completed the shell. Carpenters from the club membership joined the team and very soon painters were also on site. Amazingly, by mid October the site was handed over to the club as a completed building. The first club night in the New Club House was October 26th 2010.
Through much hard work and commitment by the contractors and members working together the project was completed in time for the AGM in November, as promised.
